CANDO is seeking an Community Economic Development Organizer to advance CANDO’s efforts to negotiate a Community Benefits Agreement (CBA) with the Seward Community Co-op. CANDO is interested in supporting the new, “Friendship Store” be successful. However, we are also interested in assuring that our neighbors and community also benefit from the co-op moving into the neighborhood. We would like to see many of our neighbors working in the new co-op, as well as making the food more affordable to the large percentage of neighbors who wouldn’t be able to buy their groceries there.

The Community Economic Development Organizer would also have the task of connecting our neighbors to our partnering agencies that provide employment and job placement programming. This position will help connect neighbors to jobs at the new co-op and other sites in the community.

 

Responsibilities include but not limited to:

  • Organize the Central neighborhood and surrounding community around the CANDO Community Benefits Agreement efforts, employment opportunities and other specific issues as directed by the Executive Director.
  • Lead our social media strategy on CBA efforts and employment opportunities (I.e. Website, facebook, twitter)
  • Outreach to, and organizing of, program participants and volunteers
  • Event planning and implementation
  • Volunteer engagement, including working with youth if applicable
  • All Economic Development communication (with participants, and to the CANDO Board and the general public)
  • Data collection and reporting (to Executive Director and funders when applicable)
  • Administrative support to the CANDO Economic Development Task force (including calling meetings, meeting notes and documentation)
  • Maintain a complete database of participants, volunteers, contacts and organizations important to the CBA efforts
  • Evaluation of the work and recommendations for the future; as much as possible

 

Qualifications: CANDO is seeking a candidate that is passionate about community economic development and who has some experience designing and implementing a social media strategy and community organizing. This is a contract position and as such, contractor is expected to fulfil the agreed upon outcomes within the time-frame identified.

  • It is required that the candidate have an excellent ability to work independently with little supervision, and that they are self-motivated and have strong organizational skills
  • Demonstrated project management skills, at least a years of experience
  • Cultural competency in a diverse urban community
  • Facilitation, event planning, and outreach experience
  • Strong interpersonal skills; ability to build solid working relationships with project participants, and the general public
  • A knowledge and familiarity with the Central Neighborhood and Community Benefits Agreement is desired
  • Strong written and verbal English-language communication. Ability to communicate in Spanish is strongly desirable but not required; skills in other common Twin Cities languages are also desirable, including Somali and Hmong

 

Position Details:

This contract position will be a commitment of, 15- 25 hours per week for 6 – 9 months (and beyond, funding-dependent). The rate will be $17-20/hour, depending on qualifications. Hours are also negotiable. Contractor will report to the Executive Director.
